  • Joined Athabasca in November 2012 as Senior Vice President Light Oil. Promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2013 and President and Chief Executive Officer in 2015
  • 25 years of exploration and production experience including 18 years with Talisman Energy in various technical and management capacities (President, Talisman Energy USA Inc. and Senior Vice President, North American Shale). At Talisman, managed capital budgets over $1 billion and a 120,000 boe/d North American shale portfolio (Montney, Duvernay, Marcellus and Eagle Ford)
  • Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Alberta and a graduate of the Ivey Executive Program at the Richard Ivey School of Business

Chief Financial Officer

Responsibilities: Finance, Treasury, Accounting, Tax, and Information Systems

  • Joined Athabasca in February 2014 as Chief Financial Officer
  • Over 15 years of diversified finance experience within the energy industry including capital markets, treasury and risk management, business development and all aspects of financial and corporate compliance functions. Prior experience includes Chief Financial Officer of KANATA Energy Group, Vice President Finance and Investor Relations at Provident Energy, investment banking at National Bank Financial and accounting and audit at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP
  • Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta

Vice President, Light Oil

Responsibilities: Leading all exploration, development and capital execution functions of the Light Oil Division

  • Joined Athabasca in January 2014 as Vice President Light Oil
  • 25 years of industry experience. Previously held senior roles at Encana Corporation which included overseeing unconventional resource development in a number of North America shale plays (Barnett, Horn River, Montney and Duvernay). Responsibilities also included leading the new ventures group, specifically Encana’s entry into the emerging Duvernay play, and leadership roles in the formation and management of multiple joint ventures
  • Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering from the University of Alberta

Don Verdonck, P. Eng., ICD.D

Don Verdonck, P. Eng., ICD.D

Vice President, Thermal Oil

Responsibilities: Lead all production, development, and capital execution functions in the Thermal Oil Division

  • Originally joined Athabasca in 2007 as Vice President, Development and Operations, and served as Executive Vice President of the Corporation’s Dover joint venture operating entity (now Brion Energy) from 2010 until 2014, when Mr. Verdonck retired. Following this brief retirement, Mr. Verdonck rejoined Athabasca in January 2017
  • Over 40 years of industry experience including senior roles at Deer Creek Energy/Total E&P Canada overseeing thermal assets and 20 years at Murphy Oil in Western Canada
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba and a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors

Responsibilities: Leading Light Oil and Thermal Oil field operations, HSE

  • Joined Athabasca in April 2013 as Director HSE and subsequently appointed to Director Light Oil Operations. Promoted to Vice President Operations for both the Light Oil and Thermal Oil divisions in 2016
  • 40 years of diversified safety and operational experience. Prior to Athabasca held a number of senior roles at Talisman Energy including Vice President Operations North American Western District portfolio and Vice President of HSE & Operational Integrity based out of Pittsburgh supporting the US Country office
  • Diploma in petroleum resources from NAIT

Vice President, General Counsel and Business Development

Responsibilities: Legal, Business Development, Marketing & Transportation, Commercial & Hedging, Human Resources

  • Joined Athabasca in September 2017 as Vice President, General Counsel and Business Development
  • Over 20 years of diverse legal and business experience within the energy industry with a focus on major transactions. Prior to Athabasca, held senior management roles at ConocoPhillips including Chief Compliance Officer of the global business based in Houston and Vice President, Law and Business Development of the 300,000 boe/d Canadian business. Angela previously held roles at the United Nations, TransCanada PipeLines and Bennett Jones LLP
  • Bachelor degrees in Law and in Arts from the University of Alberta and a member of the Bar in Alberta and New York

Vice President, Capital Markets & Communications

Responsibilities: Management and implementation of Athabasca’s investor relations, communications initiatives and provide capital markets support

  • Joined Athabasca in May 2014 as Vice President Capital Markets & Communications
  • Over 10 years of financial and corporate experience including equity research and investment banking at National Bank Financial, GMP Securities and CIBC World Markets. Most recently Director of Energy Equity Research at National Bank with a broad coverage list spanning the intermediate and junior energy sectors, including Athabasca
  • Bachelors of Commerce with a specialization in finance from the University of British Columbia and holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation
